WHAT IS THIS? The Lytle Auditorium is a new commercial space being erected at 4919 Belmont Road in Downers Grove. To highlight the building being the first in Downers Grove to utilize ICF construction, each ICF panel was painted in one of five classic Lego colors.
As the building is assembled, the appearance of a giant Lego building will be viewable for approximately 4 weeks following the completion of the ICF. At this time, the exterior walls will be be clad in EIFS, covering any trace of the Lego beginnings.
WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO VIEW THE LEGO ART INSTALLATION? The best place for viewing and taking photos of the Lego building is on the Belmont overpass at 2200 Warren Ave. If driving north on Belmont, the building will be visible on your right hand side as you come out from the underpass. If riding on the BNSF, the building will be visible on the North East side of the tracks at the Belmont stop.
WHAT IS ICF? ICF is a form of construction using insulated concrete forms to build a structure. It offers long-term, eco-friendly benefits and building with ICFs uses fewer resources, produces less waste, and keeps energy costs low. Read more about its benefits here.
HOW LONG CAN I SEE THE LEGO ART INSTALLATION? The colorful ICF blocks should begin stacking late April and will be visible for approximately 4 weeks following completion of the building structure. At this time, EIFS will be applied to the exterior walls, completely covering the colorful blocks.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA? We've always had an element of giving back with each of our businesses. With The Lytle House, we designed and installed over $37,000 in murals in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago. For our Downers Grove business, we have plans to add to the community in other ways but we loved the idea of starting off our beginnings here with a nod to our past. Through researching the ICF panels, we came across a builder in Arizona who combined the classic Lego colors with an ICF build to raise money for Special Olympics Arizona. Our oldest daughter is entering the age where you obsess over Legos so we thought this would be a fun installation that kids in the surrounding communities would be excited to see.
